Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum) to determine in a short period of time (typically several minutes), one or more of a group of tricyclic antidepressant drugs, including amitryptiline, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, and nortriptyline. Reagents used for rapid determination of tricyclic antidepressant concentration in blood differentiate therapeutic levels (typically very low) from toxic levels due to overdose when these drugs are ingested either accidentally or intentionally. The active metabolites of these antidepressants contribute to both therapeutic and adverse effects of these compounds. Rapid tests for tricyclic antidepressant determination are mostly used in emergency situations.
