Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum, urine, cerebrospinal fluid) to determine neopterin, a low-molecular-mass pteridine mostly produced by macrophages and monocytes. Increased concentrations of neopterin in serum and urine are associated with activation of the cellular immune system; they are found in patients with viral infections, malignant diseases, chronic infections, and other inflammatory diseases; determination of neopterin levels are also used for differential diagnosis of acute viral and bacterial infections and for monitoring the progress of autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus erythematosus).
