Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum, plasma) to determine amitriptyline, an antidepressant tricyclic drug that also has sedative effects. Amitriptyline metabolism produces physiologically active metabolites (e.g., secondary tricyclic amines with antidepressant activity such as nortriptyline); these metabolites should be measured simultaneously. Reagents used to determine amitriptyline concentration in blood differentiate therapeutic levels (typically very low) from toxic levels due to overdose.
