Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum) to determine two families of secosteroids (known as Vitamin D), the ergocalciferols and cholecalciferols (vitamins D2 and D3, respectively). Cholecalciferols are produced naturally in humans, while ergocalciferols are ingested from foods manufactured by irradiation of ergosterol produced by yeasts. Regardless of the slight chemical differences, it is likely that both forms have the same biological effects. A large number of bone and mineral metabolism disorders are associated with abnormal levels of vitamin D and/or its metabolites.
