Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum, urine) to determine vitamin B6, its metabolites, and/or pyridoxal-5\'-phosphate (PLP), the coenzyme form that participates in B6-dependent reactions. Vitamin B6 is a group of three natural forms: pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, and pyridoxal. Decreased levels of vitamin B6 are associated with epileptic-like convulsions in young patients, dermatitis with cheilosis and glossitis, some types of chronic anemias, and encephalographic abnormalities. The functional status of vitamin B6 is usually determined by measuring the vitamin-dependent activity of the enzyme aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Vitamin B6 may be also measured using high-pressure liquid chromatography.
