?:definition
  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., pancreatic juice, serum) to determine the enzyme pancreatic elastase, a serine endopeptidase. There are two types of elastase: elastase I, which is anionic and is found in serum either free or as a complex with alpha-1-antitrypsin, and elastase II, which is cationic. Both free elastase and the elastase-alpha-1-antitrypsin complex may be determined using the same immunoassay procedure. The level of elastase 1 in serum is a specific indicator of pancreatitis; high levels are also associated with carcinoma of the pancreas. Measurements of elastase 1 in feces are also used for assessing the exocrine pancreatic function in cystic fibrosis patients.
