Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically serum) to determine the neuroendocrine hormone somatostatin, also known as growth hormone inhibiting hormone. Somatostatin is an amino acid peptide secreted by the hypothalamus and by the endocrine glands of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a potent inhibitor of endocrine hormones such as growth hormone, insulin, glucogen, and neurotensin. The corresponding biological effects of somatostatin include gastric emptying, inhibition of gallbladder contraction, secretion of bile and pancreatic enzymes, and hypotension.
