  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically serum or urine) to determine dopamine, a primary amine hormone in the catecholamine group. Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter within the central nervous system; it also has a marked influence on the vascular system. Increased dopamine levels (most assays measure active, free dopamine) are associated with thyroid hormone deficiency, low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmias; low levels are associated with idiopathic postural hypotension and depression. Measurements of dopamine and its metabolites (e.g., homovanillic acid) are also used for the diagnosis of catecholamine-secreting tumors, particularly neuroblastomas.
