  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically serum or urine) to determine norepinephrine (also known as noradrenaline), a primary amine hormone in the catecholamine group. Norepinephrine is the major substance liberated by the postganglionic sympathetic nerves; it is also the major catecholamine secreted in fetal life. Norepinephrine is an important neurotransmitter within the central nervous systems; it also has a marked influence on the vascular system. Increased norepinephrine levels (most assays measure active, free norepinephrine) are associated with thyroid hormone deficiency, low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmias; low levels are associated with idiopathic postural hypotension and depression. Measurements of norepinephrine and its metabolites (e.g., urinary metanephrines, vanillylmandelic acid) are also used for diagnosis of catecholamine- secreting tumors, including neuroblastomas and pheochromocytomas.
