Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically serum) to determine the endocrine hormone adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), also known as corticotropin. ACTH is secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Its concentration in plasma is usually very low following a circadian rhythm. Increased concentrations of ACTH are found in diseases such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Addison\'s disease, ACTH-secreting tumors, and hypoglycemia. Determination of the ACTH level is also useful in differentiating primary from secondary adrenal insufficiency.
