Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum) to determine the 84 amino acid intact parathyroid hormone (PTH). Intact PTH is synthesized and secreted by the parathyroid glands. The level of PTH in serum is used to determine the cause of hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia and also to assess the parathyroid function in disorders of bone and mineral metabolism and renal failure. Secretion of intact PTH is increased by hypocalcemia and reduced or absent in hypercalcemia. Two-site labeled antibody immunoassays for intact PTH are the most specific assays for PTH determinations; they are preferred over the assays used to determine fractions of PTH (e.g., C-terminal, N-terminal).
