Hematology reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically plasma) to determine prothrombin (i.e., coagulation factor II), a plasma protein that is the precursor of thrombin and functions mainly in the common pathway of coagulation. Two-stage assays for prothrombin and prothrombin consumption are the most accurate and specific tests, but are elaborate and time consuming. Deficiency of this factor is associated with hypoprothrombinemia.
