The detection of these translocations (e.g., a fusion gene from the PML gene from chromosome 15 and the retinoic acid receptor alpha gene from chromosome 17) may be used as a tumor marker. The translocation is associated with acute promyelocytic leukemia and found in a subset of patients with multiple myeloma.
