Microbiology reagents intended to identify bacteria that do not ferment sugars (i.e., nonfermentative) when cultured under specified conditions; these bacteria are typically gram-negative; many of them are part of the normal flora on the mucous membranes in humans and animals. Nonfermenting bacteria also include bacteria that may become pathologic under certain conditions, including Pseudomonas (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and some genera (e.g., Moraxella) of the family Neisseriaceae. These reagents may be specific for either manual or automated tests; reagents for identification of particular genera, types, and/or subtypes (e.g., P. aeruginosa) are available.
