Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically serum or urine) to determine benzodiazepines, a group of minor tranquilizers (e.g., diazepam) with similar molecular structure and pharmacological effects (i.e., sedative, hypnotic, muscle relaxant); they are used as tranquilizers, for muscle spasms, and for convulsions. Benzodiazepines, frequently in combination with alcohol, produce an initial state of euphoria that creates a high potential for abuse. Reagents for benzodoazepine determination are used in tests intended to diagnose and manage benzodiazepine intoxication caused by intentional or, less frequently, accidental ingestion.
