Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically plasma) to determine the level of erythropoietin, a polypeptide hormone produced in the kidneys that regulates the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the bone marrow. Erythropoietin level is increased in most chronic anemias, but decreased in chronic anemias due to renal diseases. Determination of erythropoietin levels are also useful to differentiate disorders marked by overproduction of erythrocytes (polycythemias).
