?:definition
  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of a sample of body fluids (e.g., serum, urine ) to determine the level of cortisol, the major natural glucocorticoid synthesized in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex. Cortisol is transported in plasma mostly bound to transcortin and albumin (about 90%); the biologically active free form typically excreted by the kidneys is only about 10% of the total. Decreased values of free cortisol in urine are found in patients with renal diseases, and high levels are typically found during pregnancy. Determination of cortisol is also used in diagnosis of Cushing\'s syndrome due to adrenal hyperplasia or adrenal tumors.
