Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of a sample of body fluids (e.g., serum, urine) to determine the total steroid hormone estriol (E3), produced mostly by the placenta in pregnant women. Estriol levels are high during pregnancy. Measurement of E3 is used, combined with other markers, to improve the detection of fetal abnormalities such as Down\'s syndrome in the second trimester of pregnancy. Low levels or a drop of E3 may indicate fetal distress.
