?:definition
  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of a sample of body fluids (typically serum) to determine triiodothyronine (3,5,3\'-L- triiodothyronine), commonly known as T3, one of the two main hormones secreted by normal thyroid glands. These assays determine the total circulating T3 in blood, an equilibrium mixture of protein bound and free (typically 0.03% of total T3) hormone, either using isotopic or automated nonisotopic immunoassays. Measuring of T3 is useful to confirm hyperthyroidism in cases in which the level of thyroxin (T4) is only marginally elevated.
