Serology reagents intended to detect antibody titers, antigens, or toxins of species of Staphylococcus, a genus of coccoid bacteria of the family Micrococcaceae. Staphylococci grow singly, in pairs, or in irregular clusters; species that are pathologic to humans include, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. saprophyticus. The most important species is S. aureus because of its ability to cause serious suppurative infections, especially in immunosuppressed patients, neonates, and the elderly through damaged skin or in viral infections of the lungs.
