  • Serology reagents intended to detect antibody titers or antigens of species of Streptococcus, a genus of spherical bacteria of the family Streptococcaceae. Streptococci tend to grow in pairs or chains and are divided into many serogenic types according to their cell wall (e.g., groups A, B, C). Streptococci that are pathologic to humans include S. pneumoniae (pneumococcus), a major respiratory tract pathogen and the most common cause of pneumonia, and S. pyogenes, which is one of the most important bacterial human pathogens, causing a wide range of suppurative diseases (e.g., pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, endocarditis) and nonsuppurative sequelae (e.g., acute rheumatic fever).
