Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of a sample of body fluids (typically serum) to determine thyroglobulin (Tg), a large glycoprotein (a prohormone) that is stored in the follicular colloid of the thyroid gland and participates in the synthesis of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4). Increased levels of Tg are associated to thyroid papillary and follicular carcinomas, thyroid adenoma, and other diseases of the thyroid; its determination is particularly useful in monitoring recurrence of thyroid carcinoma following surgical resection. Determining the level of thyroglobulin in serum samples is difficult if antithyroglobulin antibodies are present, as frequently occurs in thyroid cancer patients.
