Serology reagents intended to detect reagin, an antibody to the cardiolipin-lecithin complex, as a screening test for diagnosis of syphilis. These reagents are used in tests that are inexpensive and simple but that are subject to false positives in the presence of several other diseases such as hepatitis, herpes, and mononucleosis. Syphilis tests that detect reagin are also used in monitoring the progress of syphilis and in determining the outcome of treatment.
