Serology reagents intended to detect antibodies to species of Rickettsia, a genus of gram-negative bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae. Rickettsia bacteria that are pathologic in humans are usually divided into three groups based on antigenic relationships. The typhus group includes the species R. typhi and R. prowazekii. Spotted-fever-group species, which cause several similar diseases that are widely distributed geographically (e.g., Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Kenya tick typhus, Siberian tick typhus), include R. rickettsii, R. conorii, and R. siberica. The group of species causing scrub fever includes R. tsutsugamushi.
