Immunoassay reagents used for quantitative or qualitative analysis to characterize tissues according to the histocompatibility of their antigens. These reagents are mostly used in tests (lymphocytotoxicity tests) to determine either total class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA) or total class II HLA. Some reagents for tissue typing are used to determine the degree of immune cellular stimulation of the recipient\'s T lymphocytes by donor cells (mixed lymphocyte reaction tests) in a culture that includes blood from both the donor and the recipient. Tests for tissue typing are mostly used to match donor and recipient tissues before transplants. Certain HLA types are associated to specific diseases (e.g., ankylosing spondylitis).
