Reagents used in assays to separate mixtures of chemical compounds into individual components according to the different rates at which they are retarded by a stationary material (stationary phase) as they pass over it. These reagents include a solvent mixture (i.e., the mobile phase, a gas or liquid) that carries the sample, the adsorbing material (a thin layer or a column), and other auxiliary reagents (e.g., solvents for elution). Chromatography reagents are mostly used in the clinical laboratory to identify trace quantities of substances in body fluids.
