?:definition
  • Wrist upper-limb orthoses designed for support and maximum restriction of movements and/or total immobilization of the wrist joint in a desired fixed position (i.e., without allowing movement of the joint) but usually permitting use of the hand and fingers. These orthoses typically consist of a variety of devices including a semi-rigid foam or lightweight plastic structure with aluminum stays and closure straps. The orthosis is usually placed from the mid part of the forearm to the palm of the hand with the wrist flexed or in extended position. Wrist immobilizer orthoses are used mainly to keep the function of the hand while preventing wrist and/or hand deformities in brain-injured patients.
