Surgical hooks designed to temporarily secure an airway proximate to the trachea during surgical procedures. These surgical hooks typically consist of translucent handheld manual instruments with a shank bent near the distal end (usually at angles from 135 to 180 degrees) and finished in a blunt or sharp tip. Also available are tracheal surgical hooks with a handle having a channel connected to the hook as well as a scalpel positioned in the channel. They can include a light source positioned to illuminate an area proximate to it. Some tracheal surgical hooks are included in a surgical airway kit or surgical airway instrument tray. Tracheal surgical hooks are used during surgical procedures (e.g., mostly for stabilizing the larynx, procedures commonly referred to as a cricothyrotomy or tracheostomy).
