Cardiac electrodes designed for delivering pacing pulses to the heart from an external pacemaker. These electrodes may consist of external electrodes intended for attachment on the skin of the patient\'s thorax or invasive electrodes that can be inserted in the thorax, esophagus, or inside the vasculature. The shape, characteristics, and materials used on the electrodes depend on the site of application and/or the intended use of the electrode. External pacemaker electrodes are used mainly for temporary pacing in emergency situations when the heart\'s rhythm is severely impaired.
