Stylets designed for use in the lumen of catheters or cannulae intended for insertion into arteries; the stylet is usually withdrawn after cannula or catheter insertion. These stylets typically are thin metallic wires or flexible rods that provide a rigid or semirigid structure during insertion. The cannula or catheter can be connected to a tube or connector for the injection or withdrawal of intravenous solutions and/or blood. Dedicated arterial stylets are available according to the artery (e.g., aorta, coronary) to be punctured and/or the catheter used.
