  • Vascular catheter introducers designed for use in the percutaneous introduction of peripheral catheters into the vasculature. These introducers consist of an assembly of devices that may include some or all of the following components: a needle or trocar, a dilator, a guidewire, and a sheath. Usually all components are taken out after the insertion into the vasculature leaving only the sheath for catheter introduction through it. Some introducer sheaths are peelable for easy removal after the catheter is in place; other sheaths may be dwelling in the vessel for a pre-established maximum time. Some catheter introducers are intended for the insertion of peripheral catheters using the Seldinger technique, which includes the use of needles or trocars, a guidewire, and a blunt sheath (i.e., cannulae). Dedicated peripheral catheter introducers including particular characteristics such as echogenic needles that permit ultrasound guidance during insertion and/or provide needlestick protection are also available. Procedure kits and/or trays including all necessary devices and supplies needed for intravenous peripheral catheterization are also available.
