Software designed to operate laboratory fermenters and bioreactors, control and monitor a limited number of their functions, and/or process data obtained while operating. This software is intended to work only with one or a few models of laboratory fermenters and bioreactors, usually from the same manufacturer. The software performs a variety of algorithms that permit managing and monitoring of the process. It establishes parameters and alarm set points, provides batch records, and obtains data needed for quality control and/or to audit the performance during a procedure. Laboratory fermenter/bioreactor software is not usually available separate from the equipment but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment; the software may be capable of interacting with laboratory and/or hospital information systems. Dedicated software intended for particular procedures used in microbiology and/or plant, animal, or human cell fermentation procedures is also available.
