  • Artificial cardiac valve prostheses designed with a circular disc as the active component. These prostheses consist of a circular ring covered by a plastic fabric (usually expanded polytetrafluoroethylene [ePTFE], a synthetic polymer made of carbon and fluorine) that holds a disc sometimes divided into two parts and is typically made of pyrolytic carbon. Heart contractions (i.e., pumping) open and close the disc acting as a valve. Tilting-disc artificial cardiac valves are frequently used to replace the mitral and/or aortic valve.
