Containers designed to provide appropriate thermal protection during transportation of fragile and temperature sensitive products using mail services or other transportation means. These containers may consist of one of a variety of thick wall devices (e.g., polystyrene boxes) made of different shapes and sizes and/or having other special characteristics appropriate to provide thermal insulation and some mechanical protection for the products to be transported and the conditions of the transportation. Thermal protection may be increased by using passive isolation techniques or by adding refrigerants such as wet or dry ice inside the container. Thermal protection containers are used mainly in the transportation of vials, bottles, or tubes containing clinical specimens, blood and blood products, and pharmaceuticals (e.g., vaccines).
