Detectors designed to assess the individual molecules that come out (i.e., elute) from a chromatography column usually by detecting changes in the properties of the mobile phase and/or the sample constituents. There is a great variety of chromatography detectors either designed and manufactured to detect eluates for liquid and high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) columns or from gas chromatograph columns. The optimum type of detector frequently depends on the characteristics of the eluate (e.g., electrolytes, proteins, lipids). Chromatography detectors are mainly used in clinical laboratories as a component of chromatography systems intended to assess components in body fluids or other compounds; the detectors are also used in healthcare research.
