Surgical handpieces designed for mechanical resection of abnormal soft tissue (i.e., tumors) from the central nervous system (CNS) during open surgery. These handpieces usually consist of a single-use slender pen-like device with an open cannula at its distal tip that includes an internal cutting element (e.g., a reciprocating cutter) and aspiration (suction) capabilities; the handpiece also includes an aspiration tube and, at its proximal end, appropriate connectors to the suction and power supplies provided by the electromechanical surgical unit. CNS surgical handpieces are used for cutting and disposing intracranial (i.e., brain) and/or spinal soft tissue tumors during minimally invasive surgical procedures (e.g., image guided stereotactic surgery) or open surgery procedures.
