?:definition
  • Central supply carts designed with an open structure that does not include side panels that are intended for the organized storage and transport in separate containers of sterile supplies and instruments necessary for single surgical procedures. These carts are typically made of a welded tubular metallic construction; other carts are made of wire shelves and/or baskets. They are usually covered with a plastic or fabric cover during transport and holding to help assure the sterility of the supplies. Open surgical case carts are mainly used in hospitals that have dedicated sterile and soiled holding areas and a lift dedicated to the movement of carts; they are easier to clean, load, and unload than enclosed case carts. Some carts are manufactured in appropriate size and using materials that permit their cleaning using automated washing units.
