  • Pipettors designed for automated or semi-automated transfer of programmed volumes of liquids from one container to another container by displacing a plunger in a cylinder or capillary tube that does not make contact with the liquid. These pipettors include a plunger that is displaced to a given position to set the volume of liquid to be transferred; then a control button is depressed to expel the same volume of air from the tube. After immersion of the pipettor tip into the liquid, the control button is released to create a partial vacuum that aspirates an identical volume of the transferred liquid through the tip and into the pipetter and keeps a volume of air between the liquid and the plunger. Single-channel and multichannel air displacement pipettors are used in clinical laboratories; they improve the precision of measurements and lessen the possibility of cross-contamination among samples when compared with manual pipetting procedures.
