  • Pumps designed to inflate balloons attached to the distal tips of catheters with fluids (e.g., saline, contrast media). These pumps are usually reusable or single-use devices that include a relatively small syringe (up to 20 ml) and also include a manual knob used to turn a screw-driven mechanism that advances the plunger of the syringe at a predetermined rate, controls to select the volume and flow rate of the fluid to be infused, and an extension tube that is placed between the pump and the catheter. The pumps can inflate the balloons at higher pressures (e.g., 10 to 30 atmospheres) than possible with manual standard syringes. Catheter balloon inflation pumps are used during catheterization procedures (sometimes through an endoscope) such as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Dedicated pumps that include a manometer for accurate measurement of the pressure of the fluid are also available.
