?:definition
  • Systems designed for automated delivery of low levels of anesthetics to provide patient sedation and simultaneous monitoring of physiologic parameters during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures performed in the lower (i.e., colonoscopy) and/or upper tract (i.e., esophago-gastroduodenoscopy also known as EGD). These systems typically consist of a module intended for anesthetic (e.g., propofol) and oxygen delivery, and monitors of patient\'s responsiveness, vital signs and other physiologic parameters such as oxygen saturation, end-tidal carbon dioxide, and electrocardiography. The quantity of drug administration and level of oxygen delivery are based on the results of computerized algorithms processing physiologic parameters data. The system includes controls to regulate the quantity of drug delivered and alarms (e.g., apnea, hypoxia, low respiratory rate). Gastrointestinal endoscopy automated sedation/monitoring systems are intended for use in routinely procedures performed by trained nurses without the presence of an anesthesiologist.
