  • Electrocardiography (ECG) electrodes designed to transmit the electrical signals associated with the cardiac activity from skin contact (e.g., thoracic skin) to an electrocardiograph or cardiac monitor; the electrodes are usually applied externally to the chest wall. These electrodes are metal devices usually attached to a tape, foam, or cloth substrate; they are available in a variety of configurations and they are typically applied with a conductive wet gel to provide instant electrical contact. Reusable as well as disposable transcutaneous electrocardiography electrodes are available; they are frequently supplied in a set of twelve electrodes. Transcutaneous electrocardiography cardiac electrodes are mainly intended to obtain a graphic of the bioelectrical signals from the heart (i.e., an electrocardiogram); they are used in diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures.
