Electrocardiography (ECG) electrodes designed for application to the internal surface of the esophagus to transmit bioelectric signals associated with the cardiac activity from the heart, usually to an electrocardiograph or cardiac monitor. These electrodes usually consist of a multi-element electrode structure that is fixed to a typically cylindrical esophageal probe which can then be inserted into the esophagus of a patient. ECG transesophageal cardiac electrodes are intended for measuring, recording, and/or monitoring the cardiac rhythm close to the heart; the signal is typically displayed in a graphic known as electrocardiogram; they are used in diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures.
