Compression/support multilayer bandages that are used in emergency care to apply direct pressure to wounds to control bleeding and to forestall shock. They usually are comprised of non-adherent sterile pads, elasticized wrapping, a pressure applicator, a closure bar, and a release tab. These bandages can be used by health practitioners, such as emergency medical technicians or medical technicians in the military field, or can be self-applied by the patient (one-handed, if necessary). They are packed in sterile packaging, and are made in different sizes for use on wounds in different body parts. Some emergency compression/support bandages include moisture-sealing plastic sheets to maintain wound moisture.
