Prepackaged collections of devices, instruments, and supplies designed for temporary separation and retention of tissue or other anatomical parts in one of several different areas of the body, exposing and/or giving access to other tissues or organs during surgical procedures. These kits typically consist of several devices and instruments that are combined to perform their function without manipulation once they are set (i.e., self-retained). They can be conformed in a variety of shapes and styles according to both the tissue and/or organ to be exposed and retracted. Multipurpose kits frequently include several flexible rings or frames, a set of blades of different sizes usually providing lateral retraction, a ratchet mechanism to adjust retractor tension, and one or more fixation posts that are usually attached to the operating table. The kits are usually coupled to a surgical table or other appropriate structure (e.g., stand); they may incorporate fiber optic systems to illuminate the surgical sites. Multipurpose retraction kits are intended for general surgery and also for other common surgical procedures, including procedures in the abdominal, thoracic, and pelvic cavities; dedicated multipurpose retractor kits including special components (e.g., larger and heavier blades) for bariatric patients and retractor kits designed only for use in bariatric patients are also available.
