Spine surgery retractor kits designed for use while performing procedures involving any or all of the spine (i.e., backbones) segments. These kits typically consist of a collection of devices, instruments, and supplies combined to temporarily separate and retain tissue or other anatomical parts, exposing and/or giving access to the appropriate segment of the spine without manual support once they are set (i.e., self-retained). The kits frequently include a flexible ring, a set of detachable blades which provide lateral retraction, ratchet mechanisms to adjust retractor tension and depth, and a fixation post that may be attached to the operating table or a stand. Total spine retractor kits provide hands-free assistance to the surgeon during the procedure.
