Surgical retractor kits designed for use while performing procedures involving the tissues and/or anatomic structures inside the peritoneum. These kits typically consist of a collection of devices, instruments, and supplies that are combined to temporarily separate and retain the perineal wall tissue and associated structures, exposing and/or giving access to the internal organs (e.g., rectum, vagina) and tissues, without manual support once they are set (i.e., self-retained). The retractors may consist of a flexible small ring, a set of blades of different sizes usually providing lateral retraction, a ratchet mechanism to adjust retractor tension, and a fixation post that is usually attached to the operating table; the kits may incorporate fiber optic systems to illuminate the surgical site. Peritoneal retractor kits provide hands-free assistance to the surgeon during the procedure; retractor kits with other physical configurations are also available. Dedicated kits intended for the rectum and vagina are also available.
