Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back tissues other than bone (e.g., periosteal tissues around the femur and acetabulum) in the hip joint, exposing and providing access to other tissues, bones, or structures of the joint during orthopedic procedures. These retractors are typically manual, handheld instruments (e.g., cobra style retractors) available in a variety of shapes and sizes according to the tissue of the hip articulation that is retracted and/or the anatomical structure to be exposed. Hip joint tissue retractors are used in many orthopedic reconstructive procedures and/or after trauma.
