Eye (ophthalmic) surgical designed to maintain the iris in a fixed position, enlarging and maintaining a constant papillary size, during surgery of the eye structures. These retractors may consist of a manual, handheld plastic (reusable polypropylene and disposable nylon) or metallic instrument with a straight (flat or round) handle at the proximal end; they usually include a fine blade at the distal end that is frequently shaped as a loop. Retractors that are intended for temporary fixation in the iris during the surgical procedure are also available. Iris retractors are used during eye surgery procedures that require iris fixation and consistent pupil size to facilitate ocular surgery.
