  • Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the maxilla and/or any of the edges of incisions performed in various other facial anatomic structures with the exception of the eyes, exposing and providing better access to the surrounding anatomic structures. These retractors usually consist of handheld manual instruments in a variety of shapes and sizes including a blade and an appropriate flat or rounded handle; they may include fiber optic illumination. Other maxillofacial retractors consist of two blades and a scissors-like handle with a ratchet to permit self-retention. Dedicated retractors for particular facial anatomic structures such as the nose and chin are also available. Most maxillofacial retractors are intended for reconstructive and plastic surgery procedures.
