?:definition
  • Retractors designed for to temporarily separate and hold the edges of incisions performed during surgical procedures, exposing and/or giving access to other tissues or organs. Most of these retractors are manual, handheld instruments available in a variety of shapes and styles and typically include one or more sharp or blunt distal blades and a handle. The size and shape of the retractors used depends on the anatomic structure to be retracted and/or the procedure to be performed. Some surgical retractors used to keep open a surgical incision during a long period of time can retain their position once set (i.e., self-retained retractors); the retractors may also provide fiber optic illumination. Dedicated surgical retractors are available for particular anatomic structures (e.g., abdominal and thoracic wound edges and organs) or particular surgical procedures (e.g., reconstructive, tumor ablation, trauma treatment).
